TOBY DEWEY has been director of Urban Improv since
its founding in 1992. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from
Beloit College and a Master of Education from Antioch College. Dewey also
is director of the Charles River Creative Arts program, a multi-arts summer
program for children ages 8-15. He has taught in both public and private
schools over the last twenty years. An accomplished playwright, Dewey
has published six musicals written for young people.
MARY ARMSTRONG-ROGERS, musician, studied acting, voice and movement
at the London Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts and received a B.A.
in Theatre and Drama from Indiana University. Since her arrival in Boston,
she has had the great pleasure of working with Kippy Dewey as an Assistant
Director for the Freelance Players. She has also worked in the Boston
theatre community as voice instructor at The Actor’s Workshop, and
as the Assistant Theatre Manager for the Charles Playhouse. Mary believes
that theatre has the ability to unite communities by awakening its’
audiences to new ideas and solutions. A former competitive singer, and
long time pianist, Mary is looking forward to committing these interests
to Urban Improv.
ERIKA CESAR
RON JONES has been a working actor and teacher in the Boston area
for over 14 years. He has been a cast member of ImprovBoston and the U.S.
Improvisational Theatre League as well as an actor in numerous stage and
industrial productions. Currently, he is managing artistic director of
ImprovBoston.
COLLIN KNIGHT attended the Brimmer and May School and North Cambridge
Catholic. During middle school, Collin was an actor with the Freelance
Players. In high school he served as an intern for Urban Improv. Collin
has worked as a staff member at the Charles River Creative Arts program
and has worked as an acting instructor for middle and high schools in
Boston. He is currently pursuing a degree at Roxbury Community College
and working as a program director for a music/video program in an at-risk
South End neighborhood.
MIKE MANSHIP is a writer, actor and improviser from Raleigh, NC
and co-founder of the SouthCity
Theatre Company. He has studied with instructors from Comedy Sportz,
ImprovBoston, ImprovOlympic, The Second City, The Annoyance Theatre and
the Upright Citizens Brigade. He also coaches Newton North High School's
improv troupe, Spontaneous Generation, and works in a teaching capacity
with ImprovBoston, the Arlington Children's Theater and the Charles River
Creative Arts Program. He has founded several performing ensembles, including
Furman University's improv troupe, Improv!Able Cause, and the SouthCity
Theatre Ensemble, for which he writes highly-interactive shows, partially
through improvisation.
MERLE PERKINS has played a variety of roles in regional theater
companies, on tour, and here in New England including North Shore Music
Theater, American Stage Festival, Vineyard Playhouse, American Stage Festival,
Merrimack Repertory Theater and Lyric Stage Company. She performs regularly
with Wheelock Family Theater, Brown Bag Opera, and New Opera Theatre Ensemble.
Most recently, Merle served as a performing member of Anna Deavere Smith's
Institute for the Arts and Civic Dialogue housed at American Repertory
Theatre. Look for Merle as the character of Susan in the newly released
feature film All the Rage , now playing in the U.S. and abroad. Other
film and TV credits include the film Mermaids and many commercials
and industrials.
Merle is often requested to perform at city and state events by Mayor
Menino of Boston and the Boston Red Sox organization.
SONYA RAYE
KEVIN SMITH, actor, was one of the founding members of the Freelance
Players in Boston. He is a graduate of the Hollywood High School of the
Performing Arts, in Los Angeles, and the American Academy of Dramatic
Arts. Smith currently teaches acting and improvisation in Boston, performs
with Wheelock Family Theater's Story Troupe and with the rock band, Marie's
Children.
FAITH SOLOWAY, Musical Director, is a musician, fronts The Faith
Soloway Trio and can be seen at a variety of Boston clubs and cafes. With
her sister Jill, Ms. Soloway created the musical The Real Live Brady Bunch,
which toured nationally. In 1997-99, she has been nominated for the Boston
Musical Awards in the Outstanding New Contemporary Folk Artist category.
Her CD, Training Wheels, was released in 1997.
