OUR TEAM

Charles River Troupe:

  • Tina Johnson, director, is a stage director, arts administrator and global social justice advocate. She holds an MA from Emerson College in directing.  She has founded several youth musical theater companies, from Florida to Portland, Maine.  In the Boston area Tina has directed musicals at Creative Arts at Park, Charles River Creative Arts Program, Emerson College Summer Theatre and Summer Arts at The Cambridge School of Weston. 
  • Cooper Evans, musical director, graduated from Hampshire College in 2014 and subsequently taught high school music at the Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona for two years. He has been the head of the music department at the Charles River Creative Arts Program since 2013 and has been attending Berklee for contemporary writing and production since January 2017. Cooper Evans has written 7 musicals, once of which is part of the Freelance Troupe repertoire. He also writes and records music of all genres for many different projects ranging from video game music, chamber pieces, and Top 40 pop.

Driscoll Troupe:

  • Kippy Dewey is the founding direstor of the Freelance Players/Urban Improv. She has taught and directed at the Charles Playhouse and the Next Move Theatre, and has held artist residences in schools throughout the metropolitan Boston area. Kippy is also the founder and director of Creative Arts at Park, a muti-arts summer program for young people ages 8 to 15.
     
  • Narcissa Campion, composer and music director, holds a B.A. in music composition from Wellesley College. She won a graduate fellowship from Wellesley for the study of music theatre and has been awarded several Massachusetts Arts Lottery Grants for composition. She has written more than 20 musicals for young people, many of which are published by the Freelance Press. Cissa is the Managing Director of Freelance Players / Urban Improv.
     
  • Ann Brown Allen, choreographer, has performed as a principal dancer withDance Collective and Peter Dimuro/Performance Associates. She has also performed with the National Center for Afro-American Artists, Danny Sloan, Susan Rose, Beth Soll, Miguel Lopez and the Opera Company of Boston. She is an instructor of jazz, ballet and Pilates at Boston University.

Jamaica Plain Troupe

  • Zach Stuart, is a filmmaker and arts educator. He was born and raised in Jamaica Plain and has been teaching theater and visual arts in the Boston Area for the past fifteen years. He is the co-founder of Sly Productions, a production company committed to creating thought-provoking media that explores culture, religion and identity across borders. He directs children of all ages in both musical, movement based and straight theater. He directs the Footlight Club Troupe and is the assistant director of the Freelance Players.  Zach is also an actor/singer with Urban Improv.
  • Jeff Kimball  is the Music Director for the JP and Newton troupes. Jeff is an improvisational actor and pianist, a theatrical music director, a mechanical engineer, a songwriter, a runner & cyclist, a multi-instrumentalist, and a musician/actor/educator with Urban Improv.! Jeff performs irregularly with the Phil Henry Acoustic Trio and with The Furies, a jazz duo. He is also active in various community theatre groups around Boston, and is a Music Director at ImprovBoston.

Needham Troupe:

  • Mary Torpey, Director, has been a music and movement coach, theatre educator and director in the Boston area for the past 8 years. In addition to assistant directing the Driscoll and Cambridge Freelance Troupes, Mary has worked as a musician and educator with Urban Improv, Creative Arts at Park, and The Actor's Workshop. It is her experience that the most exciting moments in theatre occur when the participants have the freedom and courage to express themselves in a creatively unique way. Mary enjoys seeing her troupers shine in this way at the Needham troupe!  
     
  • Hope Swift, choreographer and director, has worked with the Freelance Players for the last eight years. She is the choreographer for both the Charles River Troupe in Dover and the Needham Troupe. Hope also performs with two local folk/country/blue-grass bands, High Sierra & Blackstone Run. She received her B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill and is currently studying dance with Joan Block at AFDS in Newton and voice with Ephraim Herrera of Framingham.

Newton Troupe:

  • Sally Campbell is a lifelong lover of Children’s Theatre. She is the head of the Drama Department at the Charles River Creative Arts Program where she has directed musicals and plays for many years. Sally was the Drama teacher at St. Sebastian’s School for eleven years; before that she worked for City Stage Company in Boston acting in touring shows and teaching as an Artist In Residence in  the Boston City Schools, and in Somerville and Lowell. A fun fact about Sally is that she used to be a professional clown. Sally loves directing the Newton Troupe and watching amazing kids blossom as performers and creative people.
